During the next day Jake is instructed to practice his Tai Chi in this special place. Master Hsiao and Alexander spend the day talking and practicing.
The group makes there way to a cabin across the island where they rest through the evening.
Master Hsiao awakens Alexander before dawn. Jake stirs as they begin to discuss Alexander's first mission. Master Hsiao plans for Alex to travel to New York, taking the boy Jake with him, to see to the needs of a Dr. Allen Murphy. A man doing work for the Dragons. After two hours they make there way back to the mainland and the airport. Checking his weapons on the plane, Alexander and the boy depart Hong Kong.
The two arrive at JFK airport in New York City. They take a cab into midtown and Alexander puts the two up into a relatively modest hotel and the two seek out dinner. Along the way it is difficult to keep Jake from wandering to and from different points of interest or from skating into the street. He seems quite comfortable in the quiet surroundings of New York. After dinner the two get some rest back at the hotel.
Alex and Jake take a cab to the midtown address of Dr. Allen Murphy. The building is clearly an office area specializing in research and laboratory services. They take the elevator to the 30th floor. When they reach the Doctor's office, the door is ajar. Entering, the office is in order save for the dead secretary laid across the large desk. A secure door is behind which apparently leads to the lab area, and an access card is on the desk as if thrown there.
Entering the lab, there are three more bodies, none identified as Dr. Murphy. Three cages, one open and bearing signs of a former occupant are on one side of the room. About the rest of the room is broken glass, disturbed equipment, and a slow spray from a damaged fire system pipe. On the far wall of the lab are four more doors, leading to the offices of Dr. Murphy, Dr. Nancy Travis, ? and Bob Reiger. The first office holds the body of Dr. Murphy laid, as if thrown, atop his desk. Two bullet holes cleanly placed in his forehead. The doctor's desk looks as if it was riffled through and items taken. The next three offices seem undisturbed, save for a body in the second to the last.Jake meanwhile has followed into the lab area using the card left behind by Alex. He sees the scene and searches about the room, and after hesitation the three bodies as well. He takes the extra cash from the wallets but leaves the rest where he found it.
Alex is already on his way to the front office again, not monitoring the kid's activities. Jake follows a few moments later to see Alex searching the filing cabinet for information regarding Dr. Nancy Travis and Bob Reiger. As he watches, footsteps can be heard from outside and he ducks under the desk after warning Alex.
Two men in Armani suits claiming to be FBI agents show up and after some exchange insist that Alex leave and forget he had ever been here. He eventually complies and makes his way out the door passing two more men stationed just beyond the office doors. Jake still remains hidden beneath the desk.
The two suits in the front office go to the lab door and enter. Jake moves to try and get a look, but the door has closed behind him. Still holding the card he used before he considers entering, but remembers the noise made by the magnetic lock. He eventually pulls a coat down from a rack and uses the coat to muffle the lock as he slides the card through. It makes no sound, and Jake realizes that the lock has been disabled somehow. He cracks the door open to find one of the agents busily cleaning up stains on the floor and rearranging equipment. The second agent is out of sight in one of the back offices.
Alex meanwhile makes his way to the central elevator area, just out of sight of the agents outside the office. He pushes the elevator button, it arrives with a tone, then departs again. He seems to get frustrated as he considers the agents and begins marching back down to their location. He attempts to persuade the agents that he left something inside, they are not responsive to his request and Alex, deciding that these can't possibly be up to any good lets loose a kick sending one agent to the ground while the other draws his gun. Alex attempts to deflect the gun arm of the second agent but fails to prevent a nasty wound as the bullet tears through his left arm.
Jake, meanwhile, deciding he can't get any closer without being detected, and realizing that all the evidence is being removed, looks back to his current office and begins collecting anything that might be useful, the secretaries ID, a blood soaked memo, and a few other odds and ends, stuffing them in his backpack. At the sound of the gunshot, he jumps back beneath the desk just as the lab door begins to open.
Alex quickly and efficiently clears the remaining two agents.
With the agents now dead or incapacitated, Alex takes the opportunity to search the filing cabinets for information on the missing staff. With a quick search he finds addresses and phone numbers for the two doctor's other offices. The two then head out.
As they rush back to the freight elevator, Jake punches the fire alarm, and then the two make their way to the basement. Arriving in the underground parking level, the first thing of note is the stench which resembles the smell from the cage upstairs.
Alex calls Nancy Travis at her private office in an attempt to warn her about the murders at the lab. She seems surprised but not totally convinced of the danger she is in. Alexander returns to the hotel, with Jake, to clean up before the 11:30 meeting with Mr. Bowes. In preparation for the trip Alex disassembles his shot gun to stuff into his carry bag, begins to offer a hand gun to Jake, but then reconsiders.
Alex and Jake then proceed to meet their contact for lunch. Nathan Bowes greets the two energetically. When Alex begins discussing the matter of the William's Labs incident Mr. Bowes immediately offers a catch phrase and then, satisfied with the response, moves to general conversation avoiding the topic completely. After lunch the three return to his office where in a secure environment they can begin discussing the matter in more detail. Mr. Bowes explains that the lab was researching a creature called an Abomination. He offers a few details as to the danger such a creature represents and suggests that the creature needs to be destroyed. In order to find out where the Abomination has been taken he suggests speaking with the remaining two doctors. He arranges an identity for Alex as a security specialist for Sinoma Security.
An hour later they arrive at her office by cab. Jake decides to hang outside so as to not endanger Alex's identity. Alex hands him a radio. Jake then goes about looking for a flower vendor.
Inside, Alex finds his way to Dr. Travis's private lab, she seems to be alone other than animals further back in the building. They discuss matters regarding the Abomination.
;Jake back outside, returns with flowers to find two guys in Armani suits at the front door. Quickly signaling on the radio, he then skates up to the two men and attempts to sell them flowers, just as gunfire is heard within. They seem to be less than interested and make it quite clear that he should go away.
Alex pulls his gun and attempts to move Nancy towards the back entrance as the bullets begin flying. His progress back is slow due to the heavy gunfire. He takes out two of the mooks, then a hit in the shoulder. He dives into a roll and comes up shooting again still moving slowly back.
Jake crosses to the far sidewalk as he checks out the cars in front. Then watches and when the two men disappear into the building. Jake quickly skates back over to the front entrance and seeing no one around he opens the door and slips in. Two of the mooks have fallen, the others are further in shooting at Alex and Nancy deeper in the office. Jake slips over to one of the fallen bodies and while searching for some sort of weapons finds only an Uzi, with lots of ammunition. He takes the Uzi and opens up on one of the mooks cutting him down. Of the last two, one turns to fire on Jake and the other on Alex. Alex quickly removes one of the remaining mooks and with a little help from Jake takes out the last one.
The three quickly exit the building just as it erupts in blaze with a few secondary explosions. Nancy, now far less dubious, suggests that Dr. Rieger may be in danger and she offers to drive the two to his office a few minutes away.
At Dr. Rieger's office, Alex brings him up to date and the doctor suggests a private residence in upstate New York as a possible hideout until things cool down. The three drive up in Dr. Rieger's car. Alex take the time to call Mr. Bowes and update him on the situation and arrange for a search of the residences for any useful information.
The 'safe house' in upstate New York is a large glass pane house with an upper balcony set back in the woods. As they exit the car they are greeted by Dr. Rieger's assistance who exchanges a wave with the doctor just before pulling a handgun out and blowing away Dr. Travis. Alex misses with a kick falling on his back just as Jake slips the Uzi out from under his backpack where it was inconspicuously slung and empties the remaining rounds into the assistant. More gunfire erupts from the building as the three dive back into the car which proves to be conveniently bulletproofed and fast.
Heading back for NYC utilizing the fast part of the car they stop for a speeding ticket and then a burger a bit later so that Alex and give Mr. Bowes an update and arrange for a safe place for Dr. Rieger. Jake orders and adequate quantity of food and chocolate bars for the group and then they all head back for New York.
After dumping Rieger off at the new safe house Alex and Jake head back to the lab. Alex hands Jake a 9mm and the radio, then he has him wait in the lobby to watch for anyone heading for the 30th floor. Alex then takes the freight elevator up and secures it on the 30th floor so that no one can come up the back way. At the lab, Alex enters the office and breaks the security lock through the use of a few shot gun shells. He then moves into the back offices to search the cabinets and drawers. In his searching he comes up with a strange device that had been noted in some of the paperwork. It's construction is strange but documents seem to indicate that while it is used on the Abomination, his regenerative powers are restrained.
After meeting Jake again, Alex call Mr. Bowes to relay the success of the search and he is informed that Dr. Rieger has been killed, but that the Abomination has been tracked on it's way to Denver by truck and a flight has been arranged for both of them the next morning.
